A guide to Esarey/Esrey individuals who appear in these letters
Jonathon Davis Esarey (1783-1858): Third child of John and Hester Clark Essery. Jonathan was Jesse Esrey’s older brother, who remained in southern Indiana. Jonathan Davis Esarey is the progenitor of all Esarey and all (?) Esry descendants.
Jesse Esrey (1800-1855) and Hannah Forester Esrey (1798-1879) : Youngest child of John and Hester Clark Essery. After the family left Kentucky and settled a few years in Southern Indiana, young Jesse moved on to Knox County, Indiana and then Illinois with John and Hester, as evidenced by the 1814 and 1832 letters in this collection. In Illinois Jesse changed the spelling of his name, served in the Illinois legislature. Between 1823 and 1836, Jesse and Hannah had nine children. Then, in 1840 Jesse and Hannah moved their family to Hardin County, Missouri, where many descendants remain today. Their daughter Amanda married Daniel Rhoads, also of Edgar County, Illinois and, in then, later in the 1840s, Amanda, Daniel, and several of Jesse and Hannah’s older sons moved to California. Two sons were killed in the Civil War, fighting for the Confederacy, and two younger sons ( Niles and Septer) remained in Missouri and raised families there.
Jesse and Hannah’s children:
1 Elvira Esrey (1823-1865), mar. James Henry Shackelford (4 child.) [SPE 2002 identifies the Elvira Shackelford that writes Amanda in 1848 as a niece by Daniel’s sister rather than Amanda’s own sister.]
2 Amanda Esrey (1825-1906), m. Daniel Rhodes (7 child. w/ 4 surviving childhood)
3 James Esrey (1826-1861 died Civil War), m. Sarah Rouse, then Phoebe Blair (2 child.)
4 Justin Esrey (1827- 1900) (aka “Cap”)
5 John Esrey (1828-1888), m. Nancy J. Buckley (11 ch.)
6 Thomas Esrey (1829-1862 died Civil War), m. Sarah Ann Winsett (4 child.)
7 Jonathon Esrey (1831-1904), m. Sarah Ann Winsett (his brother's widow - 4 more child.)
8 Niles Esrey (1835-1910), m. Missouri Ann Stratton (7 child.)
9 Septer Patrick Esrey (1836-1900), m. Mary Rosell, then Char. Jasper, then Frances Hill. (6 child.)
