Dear Wife and Family --

Your kind letter of January 1 st came to hand on Tuesday last. The reason I have not answered your line immediately on receiving it was that the Lexington and Davis County Railroad Bill was made the special order and I had to stir my stumps lively in order to effect its passage. It passed the House 67 to 42 which was a handsome majority obtaining the credit of the State to the amount of $300,000 in the construction of the enterprise. It is gratifying to me that you are all in reasonable health. You write me that Isham is dead -- news which I regretted to hear, but that is a debt we all must pay and should submit, without a murmer, to the will of the ruler of the universe in all things. My health is tolerable good and still improving. I hope you will write often.

I remain yours as ever,

Jesse Esrey
